Beef, season 2, Netflix, Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan

Netflix confirmed today that Beef season 2 is officially moving forward. The new season of the critically acclaimed anthology series will star Oscar Isaac (Scenes From a Marriage), Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), Charles Melton (May December), and Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus).

Here’s the logline for Beef season 2: “A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.” The season will consist of eight 30-minute episodes. Lee Sung Jin returns to serve as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, and Jake Schreier also executive produce.

The first season of Beef followed “the aftermath of a road rage incident between two strangers. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), a failing contractor with a chip on his shoulder, goes head-to-head with Amy Lau (Ali Wong), a self-made entrepreneur with a picturesque life. The increasing stakes of their feud unravel their lives and relationships in this darkly comedic and deeply moving series.” The series has been picking up plenty of awards over the last few months, including eight wins at the Emmy Awards last month, including Outstand Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Yeun, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Wong.

Our own Alex Maidy was one of those who loved the first season of Beef. “I can think of a few series that can compare with the amount of funny and tragedy in Beef while presenting two equally stellar performances from the lead actors,” Maidy wrote. “Steven Yeun and Ali Wong had already proven themselves talented, but Lee Sung Jin’s Beef elevates them to a new level. Beef is an incredibly engrossing series from the very first scene and is sure to have everyone talking when it premieres on Netflix. Beef is not the series I was expecting it to be based on the trailer, but it is so much better than I was hoping for.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

What do you think of the new cast for Beef season 2?

Alex Garland may have said that he’s not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future, but he is currently directing another film while his movie Civil War heads out into the world (you can read our review HERE) and he works on the scripts for the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy (a follow-up to his Danny Boyle collaboration 28 Days Later). Garland’s new directorial effort is called Warfare, and he’s co-directing it with Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza also wrote the screenplay together. As Warfare moves forward, Deadline has just revealed the names of several cast members: Noah Centineo (The Recruit), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Taylor John Smith (Where the Crawdads Sing), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn), Henrique Zaga (The Stand), and Evan Holtzman (Hidden Figures).

They join previously announced cast members Charles Melton (May December), Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Cosmo Jarvis (Peaky Blinders), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), and Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country).

Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Peter Rice are producing Warfare. A24 will be handling the global release of the film. As Variety notes, this is just like any Garland project in that “plot details are being shrouded in secrecy.” So we have no idea what sort of war is being depicted in the film, whether it be a real-world event or a war that Garland and Mendoza have made up.

In addition to Civil War, Garland has also directed Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, and Men. He wrote The Beach, 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd, among others. (There have been claims that he directed Dredd as well.) While 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle is returning to the helm for the first film in the 28 Years Later trilogy, it was just announced yesterday that 28 Years Later Part 2 will be directed by Nia DaCosta.

Netflix hasn’t officially pulled the trigger on Beef season 2, but when it does, it could come with a star-studded cast. According to Deadline, the new season will revolve around two feuding couples. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are being eyed to play one of the couples, and Charles Melton (May December) and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) are being eyed for the other.

As it’s still early on in the process, Deadline admits that there are no deals in place yet but added that the scripts for Beef season 2 were recently turned in. Should everything move ahead, production on the new season could get underway by later summer or fall. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway have appeared together several times before, most notably in Brokeback Mountain and Love & Other Drugs, so it would be fun to see them share the screen again.

Beef is not the series I was expecting it to be based on the trailer, but it is so much better than I was hoping for.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

Jake Gyllenhaal will next be seen in Road House, which will premiere on Prime Video on March 21st, but many believe that the film should get a theatrical release.

A24 is planning to give Civil War, the latest film from Alex Garland, the director of Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, and Men, a theatrical release on April 12th – but before that movie makes its way out into the world, A24 and Garland are already moving forward with another, currently untitled war movie. A couple weeks ago, it was announced that Charles Melton – whose credits include May DecemberHeart of Champions, Secret Headquarters, American Horror Stories, Poker Face, History of the World: Part II, and Riverdale – had signed on to star in the film. Now Deadline has broken the news that Melton is being joined in the cast by Joseph Quinn!

Quinn has over a decade of credits to his name, with roles in Dickensian, Game of Thrones, Howards End, Overlord, Les Misérables, and Catherine the Great, among others, but it was when he played fan favorite character Eddie Munson on season 4 of Stranger Things that his career was launched to a whole new level. Since working on Stranger Things, Quinn has been cast in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel and the upcoming A Quiet Place prequel / spin-off A Quiet Place: Day One. Last week, it was announced that Quinn will be playing Johnny Storm / the Human Torch in Marvel’s Fantastic Four.

Quinn’s work on the A24 war movie will be wrapped up before filming on Fantastic Four begins this summer.

This Untitled War Movie is a collaboration between Garland and Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza have written the screenplay together and will be co-directing the film.

Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Peter Rice are producing the project. A24 will be handling the global release of the film. As Deadline notes, this is just like any Garland project in that “details behind what the film is about are being shrouded in secrecy.”

In addition to directing the films mentioned in the first paragraph, Garland has also written The Beach, 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd, among others. (There have been claims that he directed Dredd as well.) A couple weeks ago, it was announced that Garland and 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle are working on a sequel called 28 Years Later, which may be the first entry in a trilogy of sequels.

Are you a fan of Joseph Quinn, and are you glad to hear he’s going to work on this war movie before he moves on to Fantastic Four? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

A trailer for that film can be seen in the embed above and another one, which just arrived online this morning, can be found at THIS LINK. And while we still have several weeks to wait before we’ll have a chance to see Civil War, Garland and A24 are already moving forward with another project… which just happens to be another war movie. As of right now, the other project is simply known as Untitled War Movie.

This Untitled War Movie is a collaboration between Garland and Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza have written the screenplay together and will be co-directing the film.

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray notes that Melton is “a great, great actor. Amazing in a May December.”

Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Peter Rice are producing the untitled war movie. A24 will be handling the global release of the film. As Deadline notes, this is just like any Garland project in that “details behind what the film is about are being shrouded in secrecy.”

Elizabeth Olsen (Love & Death) and Charles Melton (May December) are set to star in Love Child, the first new movie from Todd Solondz in eight years.

Love Child follows Misty, a woman stuck in a loveless marriage to a brutish husband. “Junior, her precocious 11-year-old is her only consolation,” reads the description. “When Easy, a handsome vagabond stranger, appears, Junior hatches a plan to get rid of his father so that his mother can marry him instead. But things end up backfiring, so Junior comes up with yet another plan, this one even more devious, and with more disastrous—and unexpected—consequences.” The film has been in the works for some time, with Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell once attached to the project back in 2021.

Todd Solondz is best known for Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness, and his last film, Wiener-Dog, was released in 2016. “I am beyond excited to work with Elizabeth Olsen and Charles Melton on what will be a super fun and playful celebration of Hollywood movies,” Solondz said in a statement.

Elizabeth Olsen added: “I am a long-time fan of Todd’s work and to collaborate with him on this film is a true dream.

Not to be left out, producer Christine Vachon of Killer Films commented: “I’m thrilled to re-team with Todd Solondz on Love Child. We’ve worked together for many years now, starting with Happiness in the late 90s, and more recently with Wiener Dog. Love Child is yet another example of his singularity as a filmmaker – this dark, hilarious movie could only come from him.” In addition to Vachon, the project will also be produced by Cindy Bru of Volition Media, David Hinojosa of 2AM, and Ford Corbett of Gramercy Park Media.

Elizabeth Olsen starred in Love & Death last year, a Max mini-series which told the true story of Candy Montgomery, a housewife accused of murdering her lover’s wife. Charles Melton has received plenty of acclaim for his role in May December, which was loosely inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal. He even received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The post May December Review appeared first on JoBlo.

PLOT: An ambitious actress (Natalie Portman) shadows an infamous former tabloid figure (Julianne Moore) she’s playing in a movie.

REVIEW: May December is loosely based on the Mary Kay Letourneau case. This was one of the biggest tabloid stories of the nineties. Letourneau was a convicted pedophile, being a school teacher who had an affair with her 12-year-old student. Despite initially getting off with a minor prison sentence, she continued her relationship with the boy, eventually becoming pregnant by him. She spent seven years in jail, but, in perhaps the strangest twist of all, when she got released, she married her now adult former victim.

May December isn’t precisely a Mary Kay Letourneau film, but Julianne Moore plays a woman very closely patterned on her. In the movie, her composite character, Gracie, has been out of jail for many years and has settled into a supposedly idyllic life with her former victim-turned-husband, Joe (Charles Melton). In her small town, everyone seems to like Gracie and makes excuses for her past crimes, with even her former husband (who had children with her that she abandoned) having a semi-friendly relationship with her. Of course, the arrival of Natalie Portman’s Elizabeth, a mediocre actress hoping this role will make her a big-time star, shakes everything up.

Directed by the great Todd Haynes (Carol and the underseen Dark Waters), May December wasn’t the film I thought it would be. It begins as a camp melodrama, quickly establishing that Portman’s character is near sociopathic in her willingness to exploit and use the people she’s studying. Initially, Moore’s Gracie comes off as the sympathetic one, with it being explained to us repeatedly how she and Joe have a lovely family and care about each other.

may December trailer

But, about halfway through the film, Haynes does something very interesting. Portman’s Elizabeth has to approve a child actor to play Joe in the movie she’s making, and what you keep noticing is how painfully young all of the kids look. And then you have Portman acting out their predatory seduction in a lurid, movie of the week fashion (which also illustrates how bad of an actress Portman is playing and that the movie she’s making is junk). It’s at this point that the worm starts to turn, and it becomes more apparent to the audience that, despite people making excuses for Gracie, she’s kind of a monster and an unrepentant child molester.

While the movie is sold as a two-hander for Portman and Moore, both of whom are excellent, the film really belongs to Charles Melton, who plays Gracie’s victim-turned-husband. As the movie starts, he seems two-dimensional, being handsome and happy and more than willing to give into his wife’s passive-aggressive demands. But, as the film goes on, we realize how traumatized he is and that he’s stuck in a relationship with a permanently skewed power dynamic.

Melton is superb as the increasingly troubled Joe, who starts to come to pieces after being put under the microscope by Portman’s character, who mercilessly exploits his trauma. It’s one of the year’s strongest performances and shouldn’t be overlooked due to him being less of a name than his co-stars.

However, that doesn’t diminish the excellent work done by Portman and Moore. Both tend to more often play sympathetic roles and sink their teeth into more unseemly parts, with Portman excellent as the venal Elizabeth, who doesn’t seem to have a single scruple. Moore’s role is even more complex, with her using her charm to make you initially like Gracie and then turning on a dime to make you hate her. Moore uses a lisp in an interesting way. At first, it seems charming because – hey – it’s Julianne Moore doing it, and she’s lovely. By the movie’s end, you despise the affected lisp just as much as you hate the character. It’s a big performance but also a brave one, as Moore has no problem playing someone you’re supposed to despise eventually.

All of this makes May December a unique piece of awards-fare for Netflix. Haynes delivered them a movie which is as far from a straightforward true-crime tale as you can get, with him daring to throw in a heavy dose of camp and black comedy. But, when the film starts to get serious, it becomes wrenching and shows what a master he truly is. If you think May December looks like simple awards fare, I’d still give it a shot if it shows up in your Netflix queue. It’s a pretty audaciously made film with a trio of spectacular performances.

The Archie Comics-inspired Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina may have wrapped up after two seasons (split into four parts) and a holiday special, but we haven’t seen the last of Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman. Over a year after her own show ended, Shipka is set to reprise the role of Sabrina for an episode of another Archie Comics-inspired series, The CW’s Riverdale!

Sabrina will be appearing in season 6, episode 4 of Riverdale, an episode that has the title The Witching Hour(s). Here’s the synopsis:

Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) is performing a dangerous spell, one that may mean the difference between life and death for a beloved member of the Blossom family. Luckily, she’s getting a much needed assist from everybody’s favorite 20-something witch, the iconic Sabrina Spellman (Shipka), visiting from Greendale in this years-in-the-making crossover.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed the Riverdale / Sabrina crossover news by releasing the following statement:

We’ve been talking about having Sabrina visit Riverdale since season 1, so it’s thrilling that this is finally happening, as part of our ‘Rivervale’ special event. It’s also perfect that she shows up to help Cheryl Blossom during her hour of greatest need. Everyone on set lost their minds — I think fans will, too. It’s really fun and special.”

With the cat out of the bag, Shipka took to Instagram to share a picture of herself on the Riverdale set.

In addition to Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie, Lili Reinhart as Betty, Camila Mendes as Veronica, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Ashleigh Murray as Josie, Madchen Amick as Alice, Casey Cott as Kevin, Charles Melton as Reggie, and Vanessa Morgan as Toni.

I have never watched a single episode of either Riverdale or Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but this crossover sounds like it will be a cool event for fans of the shows. Riverdale season 6 begins airing on November 16th, so the Riverdale / Sabrina crossover will probably reach The CW on December 7th. Before we get there, Shipka is also starring in C13Features’ “podcast movie” Treat, which will be released on all podcast platforms on October 25th. In that, she plays a resident of a town that makes a deal with mysterious outsider who has supernatural powers. You can read more about Treat at THIS LINK.

The first two episodes of the American Horror Story spin-off American Horror Stories are now available to watch on the Hulu streaming service, and a trailer has been released – check it out in the embed above – that allows the star of those two episodes to introduce herself. She is Rubber(wo)Man, a new version of the Rubber Man character from the first season of American Horror Story.

It was said that American Horror Stories will consist of standalone episodes that each tell a contained story, but they already broke that rule by taking two episodes to tell the show's first story. But the point is, this show isn't going to tell one story each season like American Horror Story does, this one is going to tell several stories each season. Thus the different title.

The cast assembled for the seven episode first season of American Horror Stories includes a mix of American Horror Story veterans with actors who are new to the franchise: Matt Bomer, Taissa Farmiga, Naomi Grossman, Billie Lourd, Danny Trejo, Kevin McHale, Madison Bailey, Sierra McCormick, Paris Jackson, Gavin Creel, Ashley Martin Carter, Belissa Escobedo, Aaron Tveit, Rhenzy Feliz, Kyle Red Silverstein, Amy Grabow, Kaia Gerber, John Carroll Lynch, Dane DiLiegro, Merrin Dungey, Chad James Buchanan, Ben J. Pierce, Ronen Rubinstein, Michael B. Silver, Dyllon Burnside, Nico Greetham, Charles Melton, Virginia Gardner, and Evan Peters (who seems to be reprising the American Horror Story role of Tate Langdon).

American Horror Story regular Sarah Paulson is believed to have directed an episode of American Horror Stories. The series was created by American Horror Story co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Murphy and Falchuk serve as executive producers alongside Loni Peristere, Manny Coto, Alexis Martin Woodall, and John J. Gray. Tanase Popa is co-executive producer.

Murphy and Falchuk wrote the first Rubber(wo)Man episode together, while Falchuk went solo on the second one. Both episodes were directed by Peristere, who has directed nine episodes of American Horror Story over the years.

While American Horror Story tells one story over the course of an entire season when it airs on FX (at least, that has been the case until this year's Double Feature season), American Horror Stories will consist of standalone episodes that each tell a contained story. The seven episode first season will be exclusive to the Hulu streaming service. Its premiere date is July 15th.

The cast of American Horror Stories includes a mix of American Horror Story veterans with actors who are new to the franchise. Here's the line-up: Matt Bomer, Taissa Farmiga, Naomi Grossman, Billie Lourd, Danny Trejo, Kevin McHale, Madison Bailey, Sierra McCormick, Paris Jackson, Gavin Creel, Ashley Martin Carter, Belissa Escobedo, Aaron Tveit, Rhenzy Feliz, Kyle Red Silverstein, Amy Grabow, Kaia Gerber, John Carroll Lynch, Dane DiLiegro, Merrin Dungey, Chad James Buchanan, Ben J. Pierce, Ronen Rubinstein, Michael B. Silver, Dyllon Burnside, Nico Greetham, Charles Melton, Virginia Gardner, and Evan Peters (who is apparently reprising the American Horror Story role of Tate Langdon).

Danny Trejo happens to be my favorite thing about the trailer, as it reveals he'll be playing a killer Santa Claus on the show.

American Horror Story regular Sarah Paulson is believed to have directed an episode of American Horror Stories. The series was created by American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy. Murphy serves as an executive producer alongside Manny Coto, Brad Falchuk, Alexis Martin Woodall, Loni Peristere, and John J. Gray. Tanase Popa is co-executive producer.

I'm not an American Horror Story watcher (maybe I will be someday), but the trailer for American Horror Stories has me very intrigued.
