Wolfs, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Apple TV+

Wolfs, the action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, has become the most-viewed movie in Apple TV+ history. The streaming service hasn’t released specific numbers, but Deadline has heard that its release “boosted viewership by nearly 30% week over week.” It was particularly popular in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Germany.

When George, Brad and Jon approached us with the idea for Wolfs, it was an easy call — a crackling, fun movie starring two Oscar winners who everyone knows are iconic together,” said Matt Dentler, Apple Original Films’ head of features. “Now, audiences have chosen in droves to make Wolfs part of their weekend, making the movie a global blockbuster. We always consider Apple TV+ to be the home for the world’s most talented artists to create and deliver their best work, and it’s exciting to see audiences embrace that so overwhelmingly.

Wolfs finds Clooney and Pitt reuniting for the first time since Burn After Reading. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiralling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. The film was originally intended for a wide theatrical release, but that was later changed to a limited release, with most of the attention paid towards its debut on Apple TV+. A sequel is already in development.

Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the film. Although he admits that the premise isn’t exactly original, the film’s success is largely due to the wonderful chemistry between Clooney and Pitt. “Both actors play to their strengths here. They’re famous for playing cool and collected, albeit with human touches and a sardonic sense of humour. This served them well in the Ocean’s Trilogy, and Wolfs is very much in the same vein, albeit with a bit of a harder edge. Like those movies, this is a crime caper, but Watts has an R-rating to play with, meaning lots of F-bombs, and some violence,’” Bumbray wrote. “This is the two of them having fun, and with a contained setting, it’s a great hangout flick. Watching the two of them do their thing together has always been a blast, and Wolfs is their best as a combo since the original Ocean’s Eleven.” You can check out the rest of his review right here

PLOT: Two top-level fixers (Brad Pitt and George Clooney) with underworld connections must overcome their rivalry when a job goes awry.

REVIEW: Wolfs is getting a curiously unceremonious release, considering the talent involved. There was a time when Brad Pitt and George Clooney doing a buddy action movie together would have been an event. And the movie’s good to boot! Yet, Wolfs, which comes from director Jon Watts, who made the Tom Holland Spider-Man Trilogy for the MCU, I only got a quiet one-week theatrical run before its debut on Apple TV Plus on September 27th. It’s playing on precisely one screen here in Montreal and was not screened for critics.

So, what’s going on here? Probably, Apple is still licking its wounds from the embarrassing failure of their mega-budget movies, Argylle and Fly Me To The Moon, which, despite huge casts, cratered at the box office. Their debuts on Apple TV were met with indifference, as both films have the reputation of being flops, and Apple likely didn’t want that to happen with Wolfs, as this is part of a planned franchise for them. It’s too big to fail if you want to get into clichés.

Yet, it says something when a movie starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney can’t be relied on to deliver big box office, especially given that it’s an action comedy, which isn’t a tough genre to sell. The premise here is good, even if it would be a huge stretch to call it original. Likely, everyone reading this will remember Harvey Keitel playing Winston Wolf in Pulp Fiction, the guy you need to call to get rid of a body. That’s exactly the service both Pitt and Clooney’s characters perform here, with the title, Wolfs, being a nod to QT’s films – apropos given they both come from that world (Pitt is a regular in his movies, while Clooney played his brother in From Dusk Till Dawn).

brad pit george clooney wolfs

Both actors play to their strengths here. They’re famous for playing cool and collected, albeit with human touches and a sardonic sense of humour. This served them well in the Ocean’s Trilogy, and Wolfs is very much in the same vein, albeit with a bit of a harder edge. Like those movies, this is a crime caper, but Watts has an R-rating to play with, meaning lots of F-bombs, and some violence.

The stakes in this are deadlier than in the Ocean’s films, with the two fixers called in to dispose of a dead body a wannabe DA (Amy Ryan) has inadvertently ended up with after a one-night stand gone awry. Of course, the guy they’re getting rid of (played by Austin Abrams) isn’t quite dead and happens to be in possession of a quarter million dollars of heroin that’s been stolen from the Albanian mob.

Clooney and Pitt have always had great chemistry, and the film is totally built around this aspect. They’re supposed to hate each other, but the bromance gradually building between the two is palpable, building to a legitimately great finale that calls to mind Newman and Redford in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

Working with a streamer gives Watts more leverage to make this more adult than the Ocean’s movies were, as a PG-13 does not shackle him. Both Clooney and Pitt have fun with their advancing ages, with them having similar bad backs and sharing a bottle of Advil at one point. It also has some great needle drops, with Clooney’s character a fan of Sade, plus a little Phil Collins on the soundtrack never hurt anyone.

While it’s a shame a movie like Wolfs can no longer be assured of a major release, it will likely find an audience on Apple TV Plus. It’s far from the best either Pitt or Clooney has done, but if you look at their combined filmographies, that’s to be expected. This is the two of them having fun, and with a contained setting, it’s a great hangout flick. Watching the two of them do their thing together has always been a blast, and Wolfs is their best as a combo since the original Ocean’s Eleven

The Dream Team is back! Not the 1989 comedy starring Micheal Keaton and Christopher Lloyd; I’m talking about Brad Pitt and George Clooney! Apple TV+ unveiled another Wolfs trailer on Wednesday, featuring the dynamic duo as cleaners who mix like oil and water when accidentally assigned to the same job. The preview highlights Pitt and Clooney’s brilliant on-screen chemistry, proving the pair hasn’t lost their magic after several years apart.

Wolfs reunites Pitt and Clooney as rival fixers called in to dispose of a corpse by their shadowy employer, only for the corpse to be far from dead and in the possession of a massive amount of drugs. What starts as a routine job quickly escalates into a fight for survival as bullets start flying and henchmen emerge from the shadows.

Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) directed and wrote Wolfs. Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan star alongside Clooney and Pitt.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt helped lead Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven and its two sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen. Pitt’s Rusty Ryan and Clooney’s Danny Ocean light up the screen in the Ocean’s films, with the duo’s comedic timing and clever chemistry elevating the franchise to great heights. The duo can also be seen in 2008’s Burn After Reading, a quirky comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen about mysterious information from a CIA agent ending up in the hands of two unscrupulous and daft gym employees who attempt to sell it.

While Wolfs comes to Apple TV+ on Friday, September 27, our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, caught an advanced film screening and said Pitt and Clooney have fun in the contained setting, resulting in a “great hangout flick.” Chris says Wolfs is the duo’s best pairing since Ocean’s Eleven, with lots of laughs and action packed into a tight package. Apple TV+ is confident in Wolfs appeal, having tapped Jon Watts to direct and write a sequel before the film’s official release.

Today’s Wolfs trailer gives cinephiles more reasons to look forward to the film, especially since Pitt thinks he could be approaching the “last leg” of his acting career.

There’s no denying that Brad Pitt got to explore many facets of his film career. He got to be in big blockbusters with movies like Troy, Fight Club and the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. He got to be in more independent, director-driven films with Babel and The Tree of Life. He got to be in movies that satisfied both categories like his Tarantino outings, Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He even got to be in a Marvel film as a superhero with the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in Deadpool 2.

Pitt reunites with his Ocean’s co-star George Clooney in the upcoming Jon Watts crime comedy film Wolfs and in a recent GQ interview, he admits he feels like his movie career may be on its “last leg.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pitt explained, “I meant that as seasons. You know, there was moving out from the safety of the Ozarks. You embark on this thing and it’s all about discovery and it’s really exciting and interesting and painful and awful and all of it. And then when you’re allowed into the big leagues, it becomes another game of responsibilities and things to answer to. But also opportunity and delight and working with people you really respect.”

The Fight Club star continued to elaborate on his current “season” by expounding, “And then it’s this time now. It’s: What are these last years going to be? Because I see my parents are very…I see just what George was explaining. In your 80s, the body becomes more frail. And yet I look at Frank Gehry. He’s just the loveliest man. And he’s 95 and still making great art and he’s got a beautiful family. And I think that’s kind of the formula to stay creative and keep loving your life.”

Clooney somewhat reflected on his own career in the interview when he expressed his frustration with Quentin Tarantino. “Quentin said some sh*t about me recently, so I’m a little irritated by him,” Clooney says. “He did some interview where he was naming movie stars, and he was talking about you [Pitt], and somebody else, and then this guy goes, ‘Well, what about George?’ He goes, ‘he’s not a movie star.’ And then he literally said something like, ‘Name me a movie since the millennium.’ And I was like, since the millennium? That’s kind of my whole fucking career.”

Wolfs, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Quentin Tarantino

While Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman enjoy the spotlight after the titanic success of Deadpool & Wolverine, another pair of Hollywood BFFs, George Clooney and Brad Pitt, enjoy a charming life. Surrounded by beautiful people, the most gorgeous vistas on the planet, and many of the finest luxuries life offers, it’s tough to endure all that pampering and praise (he wrote with sarcasm). It’s not like they didn’t work for it. You only rise to the top of the Hollywood crop by contributing a few bangers to the industry, and you certainly only get to where these two gentlemen are if you pay a few dues. How did their lives become this way? Is their bromance the stuff of legend? What’s up with Clooney having choice words for Quentin Tarantino? Let’s find out.

Speaking with GQ at the Château Miraval winery, Clooney reveals why he’s limited his on-screen appearances recently, preferring to stay behind the camera or be the money man. He’s got a project with Noah Baumbach on the way and, of course, Wolfs with his buddy Brad Pitt. When asked why he’s returning to acting after becoming so selective, Clooney answered:

“The main reason is that it is a year on the road to direct, and now my kids are of a certain age. We’re not going to uproot our kids out of school and run around. Before that, they could just come with us and we would all go. But that’s different now. So now I’m going to just probably focus on other things, like acting.”

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt says he’s trying to act less, limiting his time in front of cameras to enjoy life’s finer, more important things. When asked to detail his strategy, Pitt said:

“Well, now I’m doing one movie in a year and a half. [Laughter.] No, I’m still kind of on the same trajectory. I feel the same. I’m really just trying to enjoy the people that I love around me and just living. [He gestures out at the vineyard.] I don’t know how to not sound cheesy about it, but just the air is fresh and the grass is green and I’ve just kind of become that guy a little bit.”

Regarding the duo’s upcoming Jon Watts-directed thriller Wolfs, Clooney says he’s happy to do the film while he and Pitt still have some gas left in the tank. The film highlights Clooney and Pitt’s whip-smart chemistry, a solution they’ve been mixing for nearly a quarter-century with the release of Ocean’s Eleven.

Eventually, the conversation steers toward Pitt and Clooney’s work with celebrated directors, including David Fincher and Questin Tarantino. While it’s clear that each director prefers to work with one over the other, Pitt can’t help but wonder what the hang-up is with Tarantino not tapping Clooney for more roles. Clooney has an idea and some choice words for his From Dusk Till Dawn co-star.

“Quentin said some shit about me recently, so I’m a little irritated by him,” Clooney says. “He did some interview where he was naming movie stars, and he was talking about you, and somebody else, and then this guy goes, “Well, what about George?” He goes, he’s not a movie star. And then he literally said something like, “Name me a movie since the millennium.” And I was like, “Since the millennium? That’s kind of my whole fucking career.”

Pitt couldn’t help but laugh as Clooney continued to explain his position:

“So now I’m like, all right, dude, fuck off. I don’t mind giving him shit. He gave me shit. But no, look, we’re really lucky we got to work with these great directors. Director and screenplay is what keeps you alive. And I learned that after doing some really bad films. You can’t make a good film out of a bad script. You can’t do it. You can make a bad film out of a good script. You can fuck it up.”

Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) directed and wrote Wolfs, which centers on two lone-wolf fixers assigned to the same job. Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan star alongside Clooney and Pitt.

Wolfs was originally slated to have a wide theatrical release before launching on Apple TV+, but it will now receive a limited theatrical release on September 20th before debuting on the streaming service on September 27th. The film is still slated to make its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, which runs from August 28th to September 7th.

According to Deadline, Apple has tapped Jon Watts to return to write, direct, and produce a sequel to Wolfs, the upcoming action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Apple has also switched up the release strategy for the film.

Wolfs is the kind of big event movie that makes Apple TV+ such an exceptional home for the best in entertainment,” said Matt Dentler, Apple Original Films’ Head of Features. “With George and Brad’s remarkable and engaging chemistry under Jon Watts’ extraordinary direction, ‘Wolfs’ blends all the great elements of comedy, action, and drama into a hugely entertaining movie that will leave audiences ready for what’s next. Releasing the movie to theaters before making it widely available to Apple TV+ customers brings the best of both worlds to audiences, and we’re excited to see fans embrace the movie as we start working with Jon on the sequel.

Clooney actually mentioned a sequel to Wolfs last year while speaking with Deadline. “We’re already talking about a sequel for this film I did with Brad and Jon Watts,” Clooney said. “It was a great shoot and Jon is an extraordinarily talented guy who’s also really joyful. He loves what he does. We had a blast doing it and we’ve seen it. It’s an off the charts great film and it’s fun to work with Brad again. We had a really good time.

Joker 2

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the Venice Film Festival has officially released its screening lineup. The 81st Venice Film Festival is set to commence on August 28 and will run through September 7. The festival’s program will feature upcoming big releases, some will be in competition. Titles such as Angelina Jolie’s new film, Maria, will be screening for competition. Per THR, Maria is a “new biopic from Chilean director Pablo Larrain (JackieSpencer), in which she stars as famed Opera diva Maria Callas.” The cast includes Kodi Smit-McPhee, Haluk Bilginer, Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, and Valeria Golino.

The big title on the slate is the much-anticipated sequel to 2019’s Todd Phillips film Joker. Joker: Folie à Deux will bow in Venice this year. The follow-up takes on the musical genre and adds Lady Gaga to the story as the Harley Quinn to Joaquin Phoenix’s Authur Fleck, who is the Joker. Recently, the movie’s casting director was teasing that Gaga’s performance will “blow your mind.” Francine Maisler, the casting director, would profess, “She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind. […]  I saw it and I was really surprised. I mean, we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this… Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good.”

Another big film that will be screening at the festival will be the new George Clooney/Brad Pitt crime comedy Wolfs. This film, however, will not be in competition. Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) directed and wrote Wolfs, which centers on two lone-wolf fixers assigned to the same job. Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan star alongside Clooney and Pitt, and the project hails from Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film reuintes Clooney and Pitt as rival fixers called into to dispose of a corpse by their shadowy employer, only for the corpse to be far from dead, and in the possession of a massive amount of drugs. Going by the teaser trailer, the film has serious buddy-comedy vibes, mixed with a bit of gunplay and action.

There are also a few glimpses at several upcoming Apple Original Films, such as Fly Me to the Moon, The Instigators, and Wolfs.

A few first-look images of Severance season 2 and Silo season 2 were also released, which you can check out below.

Severance stars Adam Scott as Mark Scout, who leads a team at Lumon Industries “whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.

Silo stars Rebecca Ferguson and follows “the last 10,000 people on Earth as they navigate life in their mile-deep underground home protecting them from the toxic outside world. The catch? No one knows when or why the silo was built and anyone who goes snooping for answers faces fatal consequences.

Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, Presumed Innocent stars Jake Gyllenhaal as chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich. When he’s suspected of a horrific crime, he fights to hold his family and marriage together as obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love collide. The series will debut on Apple TV+ on June 12th.

Lady of the Lake stars Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram. The series takes place in Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966 when the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. “Maddie Schwartz (Portman) is a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Sherwood (Ingram) is a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family.” The first two episodes will make their debut on Apple TV+ on July 19th.

Starring Gary Oldman, Slow Horses is a darkly humorous espionage drama that follows a dysfunctional team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 known un-affectionately as Slough House. Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but irascible leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House due to their career-ending mistakes as they frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world.

Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who is abducted into an alternate version of his life one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago. Wonder quickly turns into a nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.

Pachinko is a sweeping and deeply moving story of love and survival across four generations and will debut on the streaming service on August 23rd. Shrinking stars Jason Segal as grieving therapist Jimmy, who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own. Bad Monkey stars Vince Caughn as Andrew Yancy, a former member of the Miami Police Department who is now a health inspector in the Keys. But after stumbling upon a case that begins with a human arm fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he’ll be back in.

As far as the feature films go, Fly Me to the Moon stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum and is “set against the high-stakes backdrop of NASA’s historic moon landing. Brought in to fix NASA’s public image, sparks fly in all directions as marketing wunderkind Kelly Jones wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis’s already difficult task. When the President deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as back-up and the countdown truly begins…” The film will premiere on July 12th.

The Instigators stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck Rory and Cobby, a desperate father and an ex-con “thrown together to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also by backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.” The film will be released on August 6th.

Finally, we’ve got Wolfs, a new thriller which reunites George Clooney and Brad Pitt as professional fixers who are forced to work together when they’re both called in to dispose of a body but quickly find their night spiralling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. It will debut in theaters on September 20th.

Joker 2

2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.

The 81st Annual Venice Film Festival is set for August 28 to September 7. Variety is reporting that among the films that are being rumored for screenings is the Todd Phillips follow-up to the Joaquin Phoenix reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime. Joker: Folie à Deux, which co-stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, is said to be an easy selection for the schedule. Phillips was a producer on A Star Is Born, and he and the writer always wrote this sequel with Lady Gaga in mind. As far as it becoming a musical, Phillips said he never thought of it as one, but he admits music is an essential element. He said he always described Arthur as having music in him, which was also critical to the first film.

Another notable film that’s due for Venice is the Johnny Depp movie Modi. Depp already made his return to the festival circuit and the public eye when his French film, Jeanne Du Barry, debuted at Cannes. For Modi, Depp makes the venture behind the camera as director. According to Variety, Modi is a “biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani starring Italy’s Riccardo Scamarcio as the bad boy painter and sculptor, who worked mainly in France and became famous for the groundbreaking modern style of his portraits and nudes. Al Pacino plays international art collector Maurice Gangnat.”

Other titles that are being eyed for the schedule are Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas biopic, Maria, which stars Angelina Jolie, Luca Guadagnino’s William S. Burroughs adaptation Queer, that features Daniel Craig as the lead, the Jon Watts action-comedy, Wolfs, with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, as well as Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden, starring Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby and Daniel Brühl.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt reprise some of that old Ocean’s magic in the Wolfs trailer https://www.joblo.com/wolfs-teaser-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/wolfs-teaser-trailer/#respond Wed, 29 May 2024 13:17:20 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=772903 George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite as two fixers hired for the same job in Apple TV+'s Wolfs trailer.

The fix is in, and it’s lowkey hilarious. For the first time in 15 years, George Clooney and Brad Pitt are together again for the upcoming thriller Wolfs. With a September 20th release date, a debut at one of the fall film festivals would make sense, with TIFF an obvious choice for that looks to be a star-studded crowdpleaser. Indeed, seeing Clooney and Pitt mixing it up again is fantastic.

Are you excited to learn more about Wolfs? What do you think about today’s Wolfs teaser trailer? What’s the most awkward car ride you’ve ever experienced? I once had to drive two hours with my friend’s stepmom, who was a cop, after getting caught for underage drinking the night before. The kicker? I didn’t even drink! It was my friend. She was angry at me for “letting it happen.” Ridiculous.
